TELEMARK

Telemark Skiing: A Blend of Tradition, Adventure, and Military Precision
Telemark skiing is more than just a sport – it’s a journey into the roots of skiing itself. Combining the best of Alpine and Nordic techniques, Telemark skiing is characterised by its graceful, flowing turns, achieved by bending the rear knee and pushing forward on the front foot. This unique style is made possible by toe-only bindings, which allow for a free-heel movement.
The sport takes its name from the Telemark region of Norway, where it was pioneered in the mid-19th century. Sondre Norheim, often hailed as the father of modern skiing, first showcased the Telemark turn in races that combined cross-country, slalom, and ski jumping around 1868. Norheim’s innovative spirit didn’t stop there – he also revolutionised ski design by introducing side cuts and heel bindings, laying the foundation for the skiing techniques we know today.
Telemark Skiing and the Military Connection
Telemark skiing has long been intertwined with military history. Its versatility and emphasis on balance, control, and endurance made it an essential skill for soldiers navigating snowy terrains. The discipline’s military roots are still evident today, as it continues to develop both professional and personal skills that are invaluable in challenging environments. For members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, Telemark skiing offers a unique opportunity to hone physical fitness, mental resilience, and teamwork – all while embracing the thrill of the mountains. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a complete novice, Telemark skiing provides a fresh challenge that’s as rewarding as it is exhilarating.
Why Telemark?
If you’re looking for a sport that combines physical challenge, breathtaking scenery, and a sense of accomplishment, Telemark skiing is calling your name. It’s not just about skiing – it’s about mastering a discipline that demands focus, adaptability, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
So, whether you’re carving your first Telemark turn or competing at the ISSSC, this is your chance to be part of a sport that’s steeped in history, rooted in military tradition, and bursting with adventure.
